"The Voice of God" Radio Program
Posted by Vincent Cheung on June 27, 2005Here is a tidbit of probably useless information for all of you, although some might be interested to read about it anyway.
I am writing about the following because I was digging around in some of my audio archives and found several snippets (such as the promo spots) of recordings from the radio station that I was on (radio1.mp3; radio2.mp3).
As some of you already know, I started a radio program when I was a freshman in college. The primary sponsor was a woman who attended the Bible class that I taught when I was in high school. The class was not associated with my school, and only adults attended (although they occasionally brought their children). It was held every Sunday night at the basement of the Shawmut Bank close to the school campus.
Anyway, at first, the program was broadcasted on a shortwave radio station and the program (supposedly) could be heard on several continents — but not in the United States! I had no idea how many people were listening, or how many of them even knew English. I think I might have received several letters from the shortwave listeners, but I am not sure.
I soon negotiated a time slot with the manager of Boston’s WROL to broadcast my program, which was called "The Voice of God." I would constantly remind the listeners that the Bible is the very voice of God, so that there is no difference between the Scripture speaking to us and God speaking to us.
There were many more responses. Even some local prisoners sent me letters of appreciation, which I was very pleased to receive. The signal barely reached Rhode Island, and I think I received some letters from there, too. Among other invitations, a group in Mansfield, Massachusetts asked me to speak, and I had a good time preaching to the people, which included several pastors. It was also about this time that I published my first book (no longer available), and gave away many copies to the listeners.
On the program, I focused on basic biblical expositions, and it seemed that there were more than a few regular listeners. Looking back, I can’t say that I am satisfied with the contents of my preaching, but I really enjoyed delivering those short and simple radio sermons, and I would like to do radio again in the future. To this day, one thing that gladdens my heart the most is to instruct and remind spiritual babes about the first principles of truth and piety (Philippians 3:1; 2 Peter 1:12-13).
Eventually, although I was getting some good responses from the audience, I decided that the degree of impact and effectiveness of the broadcast still did not justify the resources that I was putting into it. Therefore, I took the program off the air. At about the same time, Boston’s WEZE (a station with a much stronger signal) asked me if I would like to put "The Voice of God" on their station, but since they could not offer me the time slot I wanted, I turned them down.
I hope this little bit of history is interesting to some of you, even if it is not very useful.
By the way, if you are still wondering how to say "Cheung," there is this MP3 sample. "Cheung" is correctly pronounced here — note how it is different from "Chung" (without the "e").
