Scripture never teaches the kind of segmentation that churches practice today, where the body is carved up according to demographics and interests. This is different from the distinctions that Scripture itself makes between men and women, elders and children, teachers and students. These are based on divine order and moral wisdom. But the modern church introduces a new kind of division that is not based on truth or maturity, but on lifestyle preferences, personality types, and marketing strategies. It is an imitation of the world, and not grounded in revelation.

The apostles did not divide the church in this way. They taught one faith, one baptism, and one body in Christ. They preached the word to everyone and expected everyone to believe and obey. Their work was shaped by the truth of God, not by the preferences and identities of the people. Churches that divide the body by social identity have departed from the apostolic model. They appeal to the flesh and suppress the Spirit. They estimate a person’s capacity by his age or personality rather than by the power of God. Even children can receive the word and bear fruit, but many pastors choose activities and distractions instead. Adults are no better off, as they are too often given sentimental talks and practical tips instead of the doctrines of Christ.

The gospel does not ask what kind of person you are. It commands all men everywhere to repent and believe. God does not gather people by affinity or life stage. He gathers them by truth. All believers, young or old, male or female, rich or poor, are sanctified by the same word and empowered by the same Spirit. Their identity is not in their group, but in Christ. The church must grow in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.
