And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. (James 3:6)

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life. (Proverbs 10:11)

James calls the tongue a fire to show its power to unleash unrighteousness on a wide scale. A thought from a corrupt heart, when spoken, can trigger a chain reaction. A careless word becomes slander and stirs division, spreading hatred and even provoking violence. The tongue wields influence far beyond its small size. Its reach and force make it a dominant power among human faculties. Destructive patterns often begin with unrighteous thoughts that are not held captive to the word, but are given voice and spread corruption. The tongue stains the whole body and sets the course of life. Set on fire by hell, it becomes a vessel of Satan’s deceit.

But when the tongue is ruled by righteousness, it becomes a fountain of life. It can carry the fire of the Holy Spirit and release the power of heaven. An unregenerate tongue is a weapon of corruption, but in God’s hand it becomes an instrument of mass construction. It declares truth and builds up the soul. Believers must guard their thoughts, for the tongue follows the mind. When governed by the word of God, it spreads knowledge and life. Speech shaped by revelation produces purity and power. Words of faith carry God’s authority, bringing salvation and healing in full measure.
