The End of Abandonment

The fear of abandonment is not merely a psychological condition. It is the natural state of man in sin. He is estranged from God, and he is indeed abandoned. Every sinner is born cut off from the only source of life and peace, and what he feels is not just a clinical malfunction but a spiritual reality. The sinner tries to manage this dread by building his own security system. He surrounds himself with relationships, routines, ambitions, and coping mechanisms. He attempts to feel anchored through the approval of others, the pursuit of success, or a sense of belonging to something larger. But he is not anchored. He does not belong. These substitutes may distract him for a time, but they cannot silence the voice of condemnation that remains beneath the noise.

No man can reattach himself to God. The sinner is hiding from God, and if he were to seek him, he would not find him. God must initiate and achieve reconciliation. This is why Christ came, not to soothe the emotional distress of the sinner, but to destroy the cause of it. By his death and resurrection, Jesus secured peace for the elect. He took the judgment that rightly belonged to them, and he gave them the right to stand before God without guilt. The love of God is an established fact, rooted in the work of Christ.

Romans 8 does not offer comfort through psychological encouragement, but it describes the effect of the work of Christ. Paul mentions death and life, angels and rulers, present things and future things, height and depth, and every created thing, and he declares them all powerless to sever the believer from the love of God in Christ Jesus. The one who is in Christ has passed from death to life. His guilt is gone, and his union with Christ is unbreakable. The love of God is immutable, and the work of Christ is complete. Nothing remains to be proven. No force remains that can reverse what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ.

The believer remains in God’s love because God preserves him. It is a settled covenant made by God, guaranteed by Christ, and applied by the Spirit. Created things cannot undo what the Creator has done. The believer is not fragile, because Christ is not fragile. There is no power that can cause separation again. The one who believes this does not fear abandonment, because he knows he has been accepted. Just as God would never abandon Christ, God would never abandon someone who is joined to Christ. The one who has faith in Christ is free from the fear of abandonment. He is loved. He belongs. He knows this regardless of his feelings and circumstances. God’s love in Christ drives out all fear and dread from the man. He knows that nothing can undo what God has done.
