Eyes to See

“But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.” (Deuteronomy 29:4)

The Israelites had witnessed miracles, received the law, and heard the voice of Moses, yet they remained blind and deaf. Their problem was not a lack of signs or instruction, but the absence of spiritual faculties that only God can give. Understanding and revelation are not attained by effort, but given by him.

Scripture presents their condition not merely as human failure, but as divine judgment. God had intentionally withheld spiritual perception. The text does not say they failed to gain understanding. It says he did not give it to them. Spiritual blindness is not a defect of creation, but a sign of damnation.

Just as God hardens hearts, he withholds sight and hearing. Faith and understanding cannot be earned. They are granted. When God gives sight, men believe. When he withholds it, they remain blind, no matter how many miracles they see. So men ought to repent in gratitude if they ever hear the gospel and come under conviction in their heart, while there is still time.
