“What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9

Scripture strikes at the heart of human pride and the illusion of progress. No matter how much progress man believes he has achieved, he remains bound to the same spiritual deadlock. Technological and political innovations cannot resolve the core dilemma of man’s fallen condition. Empires rise and fall. The same patterns of power and decay run through every age. History recycles itself. The heart of the unsaved man remains unchanged because the appetite of the flesh, the pride of life, and blindness of the heart persist. When divorced from God, the search for meaning returns void. It may take a different form, yet it is frustrated every time. So the pattern repeats. This is vanity.

“There is nothing new under the sun” is often used to comment on the lack of innovation. However, the Scripture here is condemning man’s endless striving apart from God. The heart of man remains incurably proud and deceptive, deceiving even himself. The verse is a call to reality. It forces man to confront the futility of human ingenuity and the vanity of chasing novelty. It exposes the bankruptcy of a fallen world system that pretends to evolve. Ever since the curse in Genesis 3, man has toiled under the sun with endless labor and fleeting gains.

Ecclesiastes anticipates the need for something, or Someone, above the sun to break the cycle. Christ is that intervention. God sent Jesus to break into history so the elect can inherit his righteousness and live. He saves them from the endless cycle of emptiness that ends in death. In Christ they can partake in the true knowledge of God and its fruit. Knowing God gives man objective meaning, now and in eternity.
