“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.” Psalm 50:12
God exists from himself alone. His life and power come from no source outside himself. He does not rely on anything in creation, and no created thing can supply what he already possesses in infinite measure. His ability to sustain all things comes from who he is in himself, free from need and free from change. Hunger belongs to the created world. It signals weakness, movement, and emptiness. None of this can be said of God. He possesses everything and lacks nothing.
God never hungers. He owns all things, and he depends on no one. This verse rebukes a false understanding of sacrifice. Their offerings treated God as if he needed something from them, rather than honoring the one who owns all things. The God of Scripture is complete in himself. A god who must be fed is a creature dressed in sacred language. Religious tradition creates these idols and then treats them as divine. But true worship is based on faith and obedience. The kind of offering God receives is the one that expresses trust, not the one that tries to keep him satisfied.
Even in the days when sacrifices were required, they served a different purpose. They pointed ahead to the true sacrifice, Jesus Christ. These offerings never fed God. He was never the one in need. He gives rather than receives. Man is the one who stands in need of everything. Jesus is the bread of life. He satisfies the hunger of the soul and provides food for the body. God supplies man with life and joy. It is always man who receives from God.
