Humility begins with the knowledge of God. It starts by recognizing that truth does not originate from within us, but that it has been spoken by God. To be humble is to acknowledge God’s voice as higher than our own, and that we can understand his word without resistance or revision.
A humble person treats the word of God as final. He receives God’s truth without dispute and builds his life upon it. Scripture is not something he filters through church traditions or cultural trends. Instead, he regards God’s wisdom as the measure of all thought, and lets this reshape his understanding of both himself and the world.
Because his confidence rests in God, the humble man does not need to perform. He is free to act with clarity and speak with conviction, not to draw attention to himself, but to glorify the one he serves. He follows the truth without craving approval. He displays his humility before God through his faith and obedience, instead of trying to impress men through self-deprecation.
Humility is not a posture of weakness. It is the strength and maturity to heed the word of God as it defines what is true and what is good. From there, the humble man follows whatever God requires.
